Overflight
An explorable map of UK overflight burden.
- Geospatial
- Data product
- Interactive mapping
Problem
National flight data says little about what happens over a particular home or neighbourhood. The lived burden depends on route concentration, altitude, time of day and proximity — dimensions that disappear in aggregate traffic counts.
System
Overflight turns UK flight data into route and heatmap views that can be queried by postcode or map location. Users can change the inspection radius, isolate low-altitude, night and high-altitude traffic, browse airports and inspect the traffic around a chosen point.
Decision
Make flight burden explorable at location scale
A single national heatmap would look authoritative but hide the questions people actually have. Combining route and density views with explicit altitude, night-time and query-radius controls lets users test a location from several perspectives without implying one universal burden score.
Demonstrates
An end-to-end geospatial product: data processing, spatial queries and an interface that turns a large operational dataset into something personally legible.
